Hope, hijinks, and one desperate chance

Beyond These Walls is a short, GM-less storytelling game for 2-5 players. Players take the role of a Wizard's magical servants and leftovers that take advantage of their absence to try and escape their Tower. It aims to be lighthearted and fun while encouraging collaborative worldbuilding and the space to dive deeper into players, characters, and their environment.

It uses 2 six-sided die and a standard deck of 52 cards; players take turns drawing cards to reveal the next room of the Tower and roll dice to resolve the perils within. In the process you will describe the characters, the Tower, the Wizard, and the world beyond the walls by drawing out a map of the land. This is a standalone game that can be picked up and played with minimal preparation, or played as part of a larger story to inform other games.

The basic rules for Beyond These Walls will always be free. It is a finished project, but some aspects may change slightly as I refine it based on player feedback. Beyond These Walls is inspired by and borrows from The Quiet Year by Avery Alder, The Tower by Austin Walker and Jack de Quidt, AAApprentices by Tom Parkinson Morgan, as well as classic media like The Black Cauldron, The Sword In The Stone, and the Dark Crystal, and the hundreds of pages of fantasy fiction I read as a kid that I've long since forgotten but are embedded deep in my heart. A special thanks goes out to Suki, Alice, Ashley, Delilah, and Threshette for their input and attention while writing this game — and to you, for taking the time to check it out!
